'He was my baby': Family furious at vet after dog 'suffocated' during routine nail appointment

A COUPLE have been left devastated and angry after their British bulldog died during a routine vet's appointment to have his overgrown toe nail cut.

Michael and Kellie Bloomfield, from Croydon, took their beloved tanned, six-year-old dog, Kitch, to Vets 4 Pets, in Lower Addiscombe Road, on Tuesday for the nail trimming.

In the past, he had worn a muzzle as he could be anxious but this time the family say Kitch was given a muzzle too small for his face meaning his mouth could not open.

The couple claim the vet's assistant put her full weight onto the six-stone pooch to prevent him from moving as he was straining to get up.

Mother-of-three Kellie, 39, said: "They got about four or five muzzles out that didn't fit him but they decided to put this long, tube one on him, the kind you'd put on a greyhound.

"The vet cut another nail and that started bleeding. By the time he had cleared the blood up, I wanted him to stop and he took the muzzle off him.

"My dog's tongue was blue and I said to them 'you've killed my dog'. I'm a lifeguard and I know that means he had a lack of oxygen. He needs to breathe through his mouth.

"It's diabolical and I am devastated. He was my baby and part of our family. I was totally numb."

The assistant took the dog out of the room and when she returned she told the couple Kitch had died of a heart attack.

Michael, 57, then came to meet Kellie and was also told the same by the vet. The couple have asked for an independent autopsy with another vet on Kitch's body and they expect to hear results in the next month.

Michael, a HGV driver, said: "It's unbelievable. Kellie was hysterical. She witnessed it all.

"I spoke to a member of staff at the vets' and she's come down on the side of the vet and the assistant and said there was no excess force used. If he was struggling you shouldn't do it.

"If you're taking your dog for an overgrown toe nail you do not expect the wrong muzzle to be used and (your dog) being laid on top off to have only one nail cut. Just, one nail. It doesn't make sense what they have done.

"I said if you went for a manicure would you expect to come out dead. It was just one clip."

Kellie, also a special needs nurse, said: "It should've only taken a minute. But I was in there for about five minutes but it felt like forever.

"The assistant said he had weed on him but it must have been the fluid coming out of him as he had died. He was stone cold dead."

The couple named their dog after Millwall legend Barry Kitchener. The dog was attacked several years ago by two other dogs, leaving him anxious in stressful situations.

The family, who have three children, made headlines last year when football-mad Michael named their newborn son "Bermondsey Millwall Den" after his favourite club.

A spokeswoman from Vets 4 Pets said: "We were upset to learn of the sudden death of Kitchener during a visit to the vet on Tuesday and offer our sincere condolences to his family.

"We have promised a detailed investigation including a postmortem examination so that we can provide a full explanation to Kitchener's family."

“I’m Not Leaving You, Mama!” This is What Love Looks Like.

UPDATE: Lizzie and Phantom are currently recovering in an outdoor koala ward within the  Australia Zoo Wildlife Hospital . They’re doing swimmingly; Phantom is both gaining weight and exploring his temporary habitat. And of course, mama and baby are sharing more adorable cuddles! For most species in the animal kingdom, the bond between mother and baby is incredibly strong. That's pretty much inarguable. But last week, two koalas in Australia further proved it. After they were hit by a car, Lizzie and her joey, Phantom were welcomed into the Australia Zoo Wildlife Hospital. Six-month-old Phantom had escaped the accident unscathed. Lizzie, however, wasn’t looking so good, what with facial trauma and a collapsed lung. In order to survive, she needed to go under the surgeon’s knife. But this marsupial mama wasn’t alone during the life-saving procedure. Phantom accompanied her and clung to her as she received treatment. The vets let them be; Phantom was too y...

Protect Our Waters: Say No To Plastic Waste!

Plastic garbage. It’s something we all see everyday. Don’t be fooled to think that these plastics are merely an eyesore.  We’ve become so accustomed to using plastic utensils, straws, water bottles and bags that it’s easy to forget the impact this has on our environment and climate. My name is Tyler and I’m in my fourth year of university in Canada, where I’m earning a degree in Environmental Studies. I'm also an environmental activist.  Even for someone like me, it’s hard to avoid using plastic at places like fast food restaurant, and that needs to change.   I’ve started this movement to highlight calls to action happening around the world, and to grow a community of everyday citizens pressing governments and companies to get serious about cleaning up our rivers, lakes and oceans . When we work together, and keep the pressure on, we really can make an impact. I know this firsthand, after collaborating with activists across Canada to successfully urge th...

Stop holding the (2018) Yulin dog meat & lychee festival in Yulin, (Guangxi) China.

This "festival" is an event that starts on June 21st of every year during the summer solstice and it lasts for 10 long horrifying days in which 10,000–15,000 dogs (as well as cats) are tortured and then consumed. However, it is estimated 25 million dogs are stolen, sold, bought, and eaten every year with the illegal dog and cat meat trade. A larger percentage of these dogs consist of pets stolen right from their loving families. The rest of the dogs are captured strays from the streets and some raised in dog farms. After these animals are stolen, bought, or captured they are then transported for days without any food or water, crammed in tiny cages together so tightly that they are unable to even move. At the yulin festival, throughout those days, these animals will be hung, burned, skinned, boiled, torched, dismembered, electrocuted and beaten...ALIVE..out in the streets for public view. But If that isn't bad enough, they intentionally torture these animals in f...
