'He was my baby': Family furious at vet after dog 'suffocated' during routine nail appointment

A COUPLE have been left devastated and angry after their British bulldog died during a routine vet's appointment to have his overgrown toe nail cut.

Michael and Kellie Bloomfield, from Croydon, took their beloved tanned, six-year-old dog, Kitch, to Vets 4 Pets, in Lower Addiscombe Road, on Tuesday for the nail trimming.

In the past, he had worn a muzzle as he could be anxious but this time the family say Kitch was given a muzzle too small for his face meaning his mouth could not open.

The couple claim the vet's assistant put her full weight onto the six-stone pooch to prevent him from moving as he was straining to get up.

Mother-of-three Kellie, 39, said: "They got about four or five muzzles out that didn't fit him but they decided to put this long, tube one on him, the kind you'd put on a greyhound.

"The vet cut another nail and that started bleeding. By the time he had cleared the blood up, I wanted him to stop and he took the muzzle off him.

"My dog's tongue was blue and I said to them 'you've killed my dog'. I'm a lifeguard and I know that means he had a lack of oxygen. He needs to breathe through his mouth.

"It's diabolical and I am devastated. He was my baby and part of our family. I was totally numb."

The assistant took the dog out of the room and when she returned she told the couple Kitch had died of a heart attack.

Michael, 57, then came to meet Kellie and was also told the same by the vet. The couple have asked for an independent autopsy with another vet on Kitch's body and they expect to hear results in the next month.

Michael, a HGV driver, said: "It's unbelievable. Kellie was hysterical. She witnessed it all.

"I spoke to a member of staff at the vets' and she's come down on the side of the vet and the assistant and said there was no excess force used. If he was struggling you shouldn't do it.

"If you're taking your dog for an overgrown toe nail you do not expect the wrong muzzle to be used and (your dog) being laid on top off to have only one nail cut. Just, one nail. It doesn't make sense what they have done.

"I said if you went for a manicure would you expect to come out dead. It was just one clip."

Kellie, also a special needs nurse, said: "It should've only taken a minute. But I was in there for about five minutes but it felt like forever.

"The assistant said he had weed on him but it must have been the fluid coming out of him as he had died. He was stone cold dead."

The couple named their dog after Millwall legend Barry Kitchener. The dog was attacked several years ago by two other dogs, leaving him anxious in stressful situations.

The family, who have three children, made headlines last year when football-mad Michael named their newborn son "Bermondsey Millwall Den" after his favourite club.

A spokeswoman from Vets 4 Pets said: "We were upset to learn of the sudden death of Kitchener during a visit to the vet on Tuesday and offer our sincere condolences to his family.

"We have promised a detailed investigation including a postmortem examination so that we can provide a full explanation to Kitchener's family."

SIGN NOW! BAN THE SALE OF CRUEL ‘LIVE ANIMAL’ KEYCHAINS

>>> Sign the petition now to tell China to ban live animal keychains! <<< Turtles, fish and lizards are being stuffed and sealed into plastic bags and sold on the streets as keychains in China. The cost of these animals lives? About $1.50. Swimming in a small pool of colored water, the animals only last until the oxygen is used up. Then, they can theoretically be released and kept as pets – although it’s doubtful that the same people who think an animal makes a nifty trinket have the slightest clue about how to properly care for them. In an interview with CNN, David Neale, animal welfare director of Animals Asia said, “Lack of food and diminishing oxygen concentrations within both the water and the small amount of air in these plastic pouches will cause the animals to die in a relatively short period of time after the pouches are sealed.” 😠So Cruel😠 ACTUAL REAL LIVE ANIMALS are being sealed into tiny plastic pouches and sold as f**king ke...

Discarded Dog Was Waiting To Die, Then She Found A Reason To Live

There are no green acres for retired hunting dogs in Ireland. No master's voice calling them home for good. No curling up by the fire to warm those world-weary bones. When she outlived her usefulness in the field, all Merci could expect was a place to curl up and die. The 10-year-old sighthound, also known as a lurcher, found just that in a farmer's shed. Then, unexpectedly, she found mercy. Someone spotted the ailing animal and got in touch with Gina Hetherington, founder of PAWS Animal Rescue Ireland . When they found her, Merci's body was in terrible condition. She was given a medical score of "1," the lowest a dog can get and still breathe — meaning, according to the Veterinary Medicine Center at Ohio State University , there's "no visible body fat" with ribs, pelvic bones and vertebrae "evident from a distance." In a word, she was emaciated. "The fleas were literally crawling off her he...

She Visited A Chained Dog Every Day Until The Dog Disappeared. But That Led To Something Amazing.

Jes is a member of PETA, and she feels incredibly strongly about the animals in her life. For years, one such animal was a dog named Edith. Jes saw Edith chained up day after day, so she started visiting the poor dog. She would bring the loving pooch treats, food, water, and once she even brought a doghouse to the trapped dog. Then, one day Edith’s family moved and took the dog with them. PETA spent a lot of time and energy tracking Edith down, and in March of 2016 her owner’s officially gave Edith to PETA because they were moving once again. This is an incredible and touching story, and if you check out the video below you can watch it all in close detail, and I’m sure that you’ll fall in love with Edith just the way that Jes did. Take a look! Now Edith and Jes are reunited and the two of them couldn’t possibly be happier! Share away, people!
