Rami the dog is one of the most unlikely mix-breeds we’ve ever seen. This energetic 1-year-old pup, a cross between a pitbull and a dachshund, is being offered for adoption by the Moultrie Colquitt County Humane Society in the state of Georgia in the U.S. His origin is unclear, but he’s currently in the process of being cleared for adoption by vets. The humane society says he’s an energetic guy that loves to run but currently isn’t very well-trained. Rami is an energetic 1-year-old puppy, He’s half pitbull, half dachshund, and all speed.

Perhaps the most selfless thing anyone can do is to risk one’s own life to save another. For David “Krockett” Krieger, a 53-year-old man, the life he saved was that of a dog he didn’t even know. On December 11, 2015, Krieger, whose passion was helping lost dogs, sacrificed his own life when he witnessed a man brutally beating and kicking a dog in a parking lot and stepped in to defend the helpless animal. In return for his gesture, Krieger was fatally shot, twice. Krieger and his wife, Ashlie, had two dogs of their own, a golden Labrador and Trout and a Labrador Terrier mix named Sophie. His family and friends said that not only did Krieger love his own dogs as if they were his own children, but that he had a passion for helping lost dogs in his neighborhood, rescuing them and returning them home or assisting strays to shelter. On Monday evening, shelter staff from DeKalb County Animal Services in Georgia reached out to Rescue Dogs Rock NYC when a dog barely able to stand and in excruciating pain was found hunched over in a nearby parking lot. Dubbed Sebastian, the emaciated, five-year-old pit bull mix had lost his will to live. Curled up in the back corner of his shelter kennel, he didn't want to drink, eat or move. The compassionate shelter personnel even tried to tempt him with bits of hot dogs and Chik-fil-A. If it was ever thought a dog just wanted to die, that seemed to have been Sebastian's wish. Stacey Silverstein, founder of the New York City rescue, which specializes in cruelty, abuse, neglect and the most urgent dogs who need immediate medical care refused to hear of it, and arranged immediate transportation to the organization's participating emergency veterinarian partner in Fayetteville. No dog should spend his entire life on a chain. Meet Rusty Diamond, a dog whose life was fulfilled with cruelty, until he met Jared Piper, a girl who knew she had to do something and save this dog. And all of the sudden, his live has changed completely. When Jared noticed Rusty she did her best to become friend with this pup. It turned out that Rusty was very lonely, longing for some human affection. As Rusty became friendlier day by day, Jared was more and more determined to save him. One day, when Rusty’s owner appeared, Jared took Rusty. Rusty was happy as never before. After getting the appropriate medical care he turned into a healthy and happy dog ready for a new life. A dog anyone would want as a pet. Luckily, Rusty now has a loving and caring family to live with, and everything happened because Jared couldn’t watch him chained up all day long, day by day.

This is such an unbelievable story that I couldn’t get through the video without crying. Here, we meet an elderly veteran from Delaware who, back in September of 2015, suffered a heart attack. Due to his necessary hospital stay, the man was unable to care for his two beloved dogs, Bailey and Blaze. Enter the First State Animal Center and SPCA, a shelter located inside a PetSmart store. The shelter volunteered to take care of Bailey and Blaze until the owner (whose name has not been identified) was released from the hospital and back on his feet. But weeks went by. Still, the man was too ill to care for the dogs, and so the pups were eventually put up for adoption. But fate had plans of its own. When the owner was released from the hospital, he breathed a heavy sigh of relief; surprisingly, Bailey and Blaze were still sitting there in the shelter. Any time a shelter animal finds his or her forever home, it's always a cause for celebration — except, of course, for those they leave behind. For the better part of a year, this deaf pit bull named Marshmallow had shared a kennel with her best friend, Scooby, at Unleashed Pet Rescue, in Kansas. There, amid the uncertainty of a life without a family, the pair were able to find solace and joy in one another. But sadly for Marshmallow, that recently all changed. Earlier this week, Scooby's long wait at the rescue shelter came to an end as she was selected by a loving family, but unfortunately they were not able to take in Marshmallow as well. Suddenly on her own for the first time in months, the lonely pup was inconsolable. "Marshmallow is crying and has been non stop since yesterday," Unleashed Pet Rescue wrote on Facebook. "Her roommate and best friend Scooby was adopted, she is very confused and sad. What she needs is a forever home to heal her heart.&

Much has been written about the impact adoption can have on the life of an unloved shelter pet — but words pale in comparison to seeing that unbridled joy first hand. Up until recently, a sweet but shy dog named Benny had no idea what the future had in store for him, or how close he came to seeing his cut short. As a resident of the Carson Animal Care Center, a high-kill shelter in Gardena, California, all he could do was sit and wait for someone to come along and save him, which he did week after week with no success. But then that all changed. Earlier this month, Benny was finally adopted by a loving family. His reaction upon realizing that happy fact? Priceless. While Benny's story has a positive ending, sadly, there are millions of shelter dogs like him desperately awaiting their own. Little Boo likes to make the rounds every night to say hello to all of his friends in the neighborhood. The 13-year-old dog is very popular, and just about everyone in the whole neighborhood considers him a best friend. So when neighbors started to hear what sounded like the beloved pooch “screaming for help,” they grew more and more concerned when they realized he was missing. Suddenly, when they looked out into the lake, they saw little Boo struggling for his life on the ice. There’s no known reason why Boo ventured out onto the ice; maybe he saw an animal and chased it, or maybe he got confused. No matter what the reasons, all that mattered at that moment was that Boo needed help, fast. Finally a group of firemen showed up, and when they saw Boo clinging to life, they knew it was going to be a difficult rescue. At just a day old, a tiny puppy had fallen into a drain pipe as her worried mother looked on in fear. Nicole McCormick with the Arizona Humane Society spent nearly 10 hours with Phoenix police, trying to rescue the poor baby. The puppy spent the entire night barking from underground, but her sounds and whimpers echoed throughout every pipe, making it even more difficult to find her actual location. Police were called to an abandoned house by neighbors who saw a stray mother dog and her newborn pups. When police arrived, Mama was so excited that she accidentally knocked one of her three puppies into a sewage pipe! Needless to say, the mother dog spent the next 24 hours in a state of anxiety and stress. Meanwhile, a plumbing company was called to the scene and used a small camera to locate the puppy, who was found 23 feet from the pipe’s opening. The Poughkeepsie Police Department (a small city north of New York City) is getting a new officer this week. Like most police dogs, she is well-muscled and sleek. Unlike most k9s, she’s just 60 pounds with a smiling mouth, lolling tongue and a lovely caramel-and-white coat. Kiah is not just fighting crime, but also stereotypes as she becomes the first-ever pit bull to be “employed” by the police department. She graduates from a special K9 training school this Friday. She is one of the dogs from Animal Farm Foundation (AFF), a non-profit animal rescue and advocacy group that is dedicated to ending pit bull stereotypes. AFF partnered with Universal K9 and Austin Pets Alive! to rescue pitties and then train them for police detection work. Kiah is going to be one of the first graduates of this special program. In a video recently posted to YouTube, Shelby Turner‘s ultra-amazing boyfriend surprises her with a puppy. And oh yeah, the adorable dog also came with a proposal. This guy was already a total contender for the boyfriend of the year award (we know there’s no such thing, but still…) when he turned up with a sweet chocolate lab puppy, complete with a precious pink polka dot bow around its neck. But then he told Shelby to check the little dog’s name tag and SPOILER ALERT it wasn’t a tag at all. It was an engagement ring. OUR HEARTS. Shelby basically dissolved into a puddle of happy tears. Not that we blame her one bit.

With Christmas right around the corner, spirits are high, with families planning trips, gifts, and time together, but sometimes we forget about our furry little pets.
