Howling is written into dogs’ DNA from when they were wolves. These wild animals using howling for a variety of reasons for communication, but it seems that their domesticated cousins only howl when others are, or when they hear a sound that’s similar to howling. Not all dogs actually seem interested in howling either.
But it’s the learning process that’s the most amusing, as puppies can learn to howl at very young ages. Watch as this owner tries to teach his new beagle puppy how to exercise those vocal cords with a few attempts at howling. He doesn’t seem interested at first, but he soon chimes in with a lovely voice of his own, crooning those high notes so he can get some practice.
