In Victoria, Australia, a couple was driving down the road when a sad sight caught their attention. They thought that they were looking at the corpse of a sheep, so they stopped the car to check on the poor animal. Then, they saw the sheep’s leg twitch.

Without hesitation the couple called Pam Ahern, who is the founder of Edgar’s Mission. That local animal shelter would more than likely have the capabilities to care for this emaciated and dying sheep.

But there was a problem — Pam was hours away taking care of a sick calf. The couple tried to get in contact with other organizations. When they drove by hours later, the sheep was still in the same spot.

The couple eventually sent a picture to Pam, and she came as quickly as she could. The sheep was on the brink of death, and there was very little hope that she would survive.

The named the sheep Posy, and loaded her onto a stretcher, which they put into their rescue vehicle. When offered hay, Posy actually managed to eat some! It was a good sign that she would still be able to pull through.

When examined at the shelter it was discovered that Posy had flystrike, a disease caused by flies laying eggs on a sheep’s skin. When the eggs hatch the larvae eat at the sheep.

Posy also had a maggot infested hoof, large patches of missing wool, and she had clearly not eaten in a long while. The shelter was able to get her all fixed up, though! She now stays at the sanctuary and spends her days playing with the rest of the flock!
