In 1990, a man jumped into a chimp enclosure to save the life of a chimpanzee. Rick Swope saw a fight break out between two chimpanzees and the Detroit Zoo, when one chimp fell into the water and started to drown, Rick jumped in and dragged him to shore! The story of Rick’s heroic actions briefly held national attention.
But Rick made an impression! In 2005, Jane Goodall mentioned the incident and talked about a conversation she institutes then-director had had with Swopes. He had called Rick and told him he was very brave. Rick’s response was that he had looked into the eyes of the chimp, and they seemed to be asking ‘Won’t anybody help me?” So, Rick did!
